Apartment Hunt

PRO TIP:

Take photos and notes and spreadsheets to keep track of all the apartments you’re looking at. They’ll all be fairly similar and it’s easy to forget information about each one.

Apartment Hunt

Tips

  1. Look at your budget

How much can you comfortably pay for rent? Remember, you’ll need to pay security deposit (usually first and last month’s rent) and moving costs. Be open to having roommates when you get your first apartment.

  2. Ask the realtor as many questions as you want

Here are questions to ask a realtor when apartment hunting.

  3. Ask your friends & family and social community if they know anyone that needs a roommate

You can also easily find people on Facebook Housing/Sublet groups, Roomi, Diggz, Rainbow Roommates and other roommate apps

  4. Things to consider when apartment hunting:

Rent, Parking, size of apartment, does it include utilities, proximity to public transportation, proximity to work and restaurants, laundry, type of neighborhood, do you feel safe?

  5. Visit in person if possible or have a friend go to make sure it’s not a scam

It's easy to manipulate photos, so make sure you know exactly what you're getting

  6. Research the leasing company and check reviews

Ask around, google the landlord. If you live in NYC, here are some measures to take to prevent landlord issues or fraud

  7. If you’re on the fence, grab a short term sublet to get a feel of the area and to get more time to find a place you like

You can always live an apartment for a few months to get a feel of which area you'd like to live in.

  8. If you sign halfway through a month, get it prorated and not pay the full month

Prorated means that you just pay for the days that you are there.

  9. Look in cabinets and closets on tours, that’s where cracks and bugs are hidden. Check some outlets to make sure they work.

Always check cabinets and drawers, that's where little bugs like to hide.

  10. Read the full contract

There are sometimes typos. Look for agreements about pets, utilities, subletting and restrictions around breaking lease.

I caught a mistake on mine about utlities, so always double check.
